In the world of jigsaw puzzles, Ravensburger is the rock star of imagery. Their puzzles are filled with dreamy colors and vistas that take the puzzle solver on a virtual journey. Now, to take that analogy even further, the company has created apps for four of its newest offerings that combine visual imagery with augmented reality. Mail Online calls it spectacular animation while GizMag says the apps bring the artwork to life. To help users see what is being offered, the company has posted a video of its products on YouTube.
According to Mail Online, the apps only work once the puzzle has been completed. To get them to come to life, the puzzle solver downloads an app from Ravensburger and then takes a picture of the completed puzzle. Once the site is satisfied that the customer truly has completed the puzzle, an augmented reality version of the puzzle is launched showing the real world environment in which the image was first created in all of its three dimensional glory.
To make the augmented reality apps, the company takes along 3D cameras capable of capturing a full panorama when snapping the pic that will eventually make it into puzzle form. The 3D panorama is then incorporated into an augmented reality vista for customers to use once they finish putting the puzzle together. To get the best experience, users are advised to use the app with a tablet computer, rather than a phone, but that's only to get a bigger picture.
In practice as can be seen in the video, the user can see the whole 360° world in which their puzzle picture existed by simply standing in their room holding their tablet aloft and turning around as if using the tablet to view the world around them. In so doing, users can see objects moving around (fish in the aquarium puzzle app for example) turn on features that identify objects (such as buildings in the Paris view app) make ripples in the water (with the fjord app) or tickle the animals (in the Animals of Africa app).
Ravensburger, always progressive with its real world puzzles is clearly trying to keep abreast of new technology with its jigsaw puzzle and associated apps, and that's likely to be a very good thing for puzzle aficionados and just might entice others who have only dabbled before to become true enthusiasts. And for those looking to get something truly unique for someone they love this next holiday season, one of these puzzle might just be the thing. Visit: https://jigsawdepot.com/
